Communication and Calendar: what’s new

The Communication module now supports categories. You can tag your posts by topic with a customisable colour: Primary, Secondary, Catering, Trips, Admissions.

This label and colour show up everywhere: in your lists, on the calendar, on widgets, and on the Parent Portal.

The Calendar module is evolving too. Four views are now available: Week, Month, Year and List, so you can move from the hour-by-hour detail of a single day to an overview of an entire school year.

Teaching & Learning

Attendance: early-departure management is now available

The Attendance Management module now handles students leaving before the end of their scheduled classes.

An early departure can be reported by families from the Parent Portal, entered by the attendance office, or logged by the school nurse in the Infirmary module.

It works whether you take the register by lesson, by day or by half-day. See here.

Two new attendance indicators give school leadership a richer view of student behaviour:

• the number of consecutive days of absence;
• the absenteeism rate.

A major update to the Eduka Mobile app for parents and staff

For this new school year, the Eduka Mobile app is getting a host of changes:

1. A fully responsive interface, designed for mobile, customisable by profile, with a large catalogue of widgets and a clearer navigation icon grid.
2. A Parent Portal that centralises report cards, absence reporting, online fee payment, booking parent-teacher meeting slots, extracurricular activity sign-ups, transport tracking, and uniform ordering, with real-time notifications on the app.
3. Extracurricular activity sign-ups by lottery: families rank their preferences from their portal (web/app), and an algorithm then allocates places fairly.

Should classrooms go screen-free?

Chicago, NYU, Yale: several American universities are banning laptops and phones from certain classes to help students relearn how to think without relying on AI. Other experts are more nuanced: devices also support collaborative work, and a full ban would remain largely symbolic.
